Our Story

Bokkie started as a Street Food business back in 2017 out of Claire’s passion for food and cooking. We offered street food and catering in Aylesbury. With over 20 years experience in event planning and hospitality, Claire wanted to create food that would not only excite people’s palates, but be unique in its offering and suitable for any occasion.

What we do?

We provide a relaxed informal style of catering perfect for any event.

Whether that be at a market or festival, to watch people joyously devouring the food with fun and laughter at a wedding or an event.

Catering in Aylesbury

Claire, and everyone at Bokkie is passionate about provenance and quality  produce. Using local producers, artisans and suppliers where we can to ensure that quality, flavour and detail comes through in each dish.

Offering something unique was important,  wanting people to experience something new, and food that wasn’t readily available in the area. Claire looked back at the food she ate in South Africa when growing up, and what her Grandmother (Gamma), Mother and Auntie’s would make. Using her culinary knowledge and skills, she started to refine some of the dishes, incorporating artisan breads, and using local produce thus creating a fusion.

South African cuisine

South African cuisine is steeped in a long and complex history. It is a blend of European, Asian and African cultures, and traditions. The aromatic spicy flavours of the Indian and Portuguese. Rich light French cuisine, the sweet and spicy flavours of Malaysian food with hearty comfort food from the German and Dutch, combined with African flavours is simply a culinary delight that I couldn’t ignore.

The Bokkie Family

“My biggest inspiration comes from my family, its where it all started with my late Gamma, who I watched cook and learnt new dishes and ideas from. The love of curry and Biryiani has to come from my late Aunt, Aunty Linky. If you didn’t finish your plate of food “you weren’t doing justice to her cooking”, I’ll never forget her saying that. Rarely did anyone leave any of her food, they were always going up for seconds or even thirds!! My mother and my sister have influenced me greatly with teaching me new recipes and giving me this ongoing passion and love for food. Making Roti using old school techniques with my Sister for 100 people certainly gives you stamina.

It was also important that the name of my business reflected the love, care and attention that goes into the food whatever the occasion. Bokkie is a term of endearment and means my love, my dear and fits very nicely with what we provide and that’s Food from the heart.” – Claire
